One of the most dangerous fates you don’t want your phone to experience is falling or slipping off your hand or from a surface to the ground.

A smartphone crashing to the ground is the second most dangerous mishap after Smartphone theft (Codecjay – 2018).

Screens shatter, or you may get lucky, the damage will be just a crack. If you are so unfortunate and your smartphone is one of these high-end phones, you need to break into a bank before you can fix it.

Most of us have been cursed to constantly drop our phones. Are you one of them? If you are, then a German student may have an innovative solution for you.

It’s called an ‘active damping‘ (AD) phone case. It has built-in sensors and eight springs that look like hooks.

These sensors automatically detect when the phone is in free fall, and then deploy the springs to catch the phone when it hits the ground.

The designer; a German student by name, Philip Frenzel and also a student from Aalen University in Germany, calls his invention an ‘airbag’ for smartphones.

Each corner has two springs, but it is currently unknown what measures are in place to stop the case from activating accidentally.

The video below shows a smartphone adorned with the casing, bouncing harmlessly after the user dropped it.

After a fall, the owner of the Smartphone can simply pick it up and fold the springs back into the case so it’s ready to deploy during any accidental next drop.

Frenzel won the top award from the German Society for Mechatronics for his phone case, even though the design is still a prototype.

He has also patented the technology, meaning the case could be readily available to consumers in the near future.

The case appears to work perfectly on flat surfaces, but there is no indication that results would be as solid if the phone is dropped on a jagged or uneven edge.

There are so many Smartphone case options in the market that claims to protect your phone. They range from waterproof cases to the ones that claim to be ‘indestructible’, another option has just been added, hope it arrives among the competition.
