Samsung Electronics likely to procure phone batteries from LG Chem

Samsung recorded the biggest failure in its history this year, 2016 after the $882 Samsung galaxy Note 7 device started malfunctioning and bursting into flames. This led to Samsung recalling 2.5 million fire-prone Note 7s in early September and finally pulling the plug on the device on October after the replacement phones using the China Amperex Technology also caught fire.

The problem that led to the Note 7 bursting out into flames was attributed to the battery which was supplied by Samsung SDI and China’s Amperex Technology.

According to Chosun Ilbo Newspaper. Samsung is in talks with LG Chem Ltd to make it one of its smartphone battery manufacturers.  This is done so that they can diversify their battery suppliers and avoid the same thing that happened to the Note7 from happening again.

Currently, LG Chem makes phone batteries for its affiliate LG Electronics and U.S. company Apple Inc.
